Your Clock, Change Your Battery
A home fire
impacts the life of a family every 85 seconds and an average of
nearly three children a day die in these fires. By providing early
warning and critical extra seconds to escape, smoke detectors double
your family's chance of getting out of a home fire alive -- but
only if they work. So, when you turn your clocks back, also make
a lifesaving change in your home... change the batteries in your
smoke detectors. This simple task takes just a moment and is the
best defense your family has against the devastating effects of
a home fire.
-
Make sure
the detector works by pushing the test button.
-
Vacuum
the detector to clean away dust that may delay its operation.
-
Check that
there are smoke detectors on every floor, in the halls leading
to the bedrooms and inside each bedroom.
-
Plan two
escape routes from your home and select a meeting place for
your family outside your home. Practice using these routines
by having periodic family escape drills.
Halloween
Safety

Halloween is
a time for spooks, goblins and scary costumes... and also a time
to make sure your child is safe while trick-or-treating. Follow
these tips to help protect your little ghost or princess and let
them enjoy Halloween night:
-
Wear bright
colored clothing that alerts motorists when you're crossing
the street. If the costume is dark, hang glow lights from the
front and back of your child;
-
Supervisors
should carry flashlights to guide everyone if you're walking
in the dark;
-
Travel
in groups... there is safety in numbers;
-
Adults
should check the goodies collected. Be especially careful of
eating unwrapped or partially wrapped candies.
