Holiday & Winter Safety
Follow these tips to make your "jolly holiday" a fire safe one!
CHRISTMAS TREES

- A cut Christmas tree is like a cut flower - neither will last very long without water. Keep your tree fresh by placing it in a stand that holds water and check the water level daily.
- Locate the tree away from heat sources - do not place it near a heater, woodstove or fireplace. Don't place it in a location so that it blocks an exit.
- Only use approved "interior use" lights on your tree.
- Never leave a lit tree unattended.
- Never burn a cut, dried-out Christmas tree in your fireplace or woodstove. Dispose of it by putting it out with your garbage on your regular collection day for the two weeks after Christmas.
LIGHTS
- Carefully check all electrical wiring before you install decorations. Check light sets for broken sockets and defective wiring.
- Use only UL approved outdoor lights outdoors. Never use indoor lights outside or outdoor lights inside.
- Turn off decorative lights when you leave the house or go to bed.
- Don't over load electrical circuits by plugging in too many electrical appliances into one outlet.
CANDLES & OPEN FLAMES
- Place candles in sturdy, non-flammable holders or containers.

- Locate candles away from the tree, evergreen arrangements and other flammable decorations.
- Extinguish candles before leaving the house or going to bed.
- Don't hang stockings near the opening of the fireplace
- Never burn wrapping paper in a fireplace or woodstove.
- Keep combustibles away from fireplaces, woodstoves and heaters.
- Never leave matches or lighters where children can reach them.
SAFEGUARDS
- Keep a UL listed ABC fire extinguisher accessible for use in your home.
- Check the batteries in your smoke detectors. Make sure there is one in each bedroom and in the hall.
