Winter Safety
Winter is here and so are the holidays… here are some tips to keep you and your family fire safe and enjoy the season!
Candles and Open Flames
- Place candles in sturdy, non-flammable holders or containers.
- Locate candles away from flammable decorations and arrangements.
- Extinguish candles before leaving the house or going to bed.
- Don’t hang stockings near the opening of the fireplace.
- Never burn wrapping paper in a fireplace or wood stove.
- Keep combustibles away from fireplaces, wood stoves and heaters.
- Never leave matches or lighters where children can reach them.
If you celebrate the Christmas holiday, follow these tips about Christmas trees to keep your holidays bright:
Christmas Trees
- A cut Christmas tree is like a cut flower – neither will last very long without water. Keep your tree fresh by placing it in a stand that holds water and check the water level daily.
- Locate the tree away from heat sources – do not place it near a heater, wood stove or fireplace. Don’t place it in a location so that it blocks an exit.
- Only use approved “interior use” lights on your tree.
- Never leave a lit tree unattended.
- Never burn a cut, dried out Christmas tree in your fireplace or wood stove. Dispose of it by putting it out with your garbage on your regular collection day for the two weeks after Christmas.
Using lights to brighten up your house during the holidays?
Lights
- Carefully check all electrical wiring before you install decorations. Check lights sets for broken sockets and defective wiring.
- Use only UL approved outdoor lights outdoors. Never use indoor lights outside and outside lights inside.
- Turn off decorative lights when you leave the house or go to bed.
- Don’t overload electrical circuits by plugging in too many electrical appliances into one outlet.
